Huddersfield Modern Quilt Guild

For quite some time it has been apparent that there are a growing number of modern quilters in the Huddersfield area. Here at Simply Solids we wanted to bring you all together and so we have decided to get a Huddersfield Modern Quilt Guild started!

We have scheduled the first meeting to be held in the downstairs teaching space at our shop in Slaithwaite at 10am on Sunday March 25th 2018 and we will be running monthly guild sit and sew / meeting sessions on the last Sunday of each month in the same space from 10am – 4pm. If you love modern fabric and modern quilts then please come along, everyone is welcome! Please note though that this is a Modern Quilt Guild and as such all attendees will be expected to work with modern fabric on modern quilts.

We intend to run a full MQG programme for those that want to participate and this will include things like inter-quild swaps, fabric challenges set by the Modern Quilt Guild and the making of modern quilts to be hung at various local and national quilt shows. We also intend to become affiliate members of the Modern Quilt Guild and the British Quilt Guild.

If you would like more information or to sign up to our newsletter please do email us at

Grand Opening Arts & Crafts fair

We’ve been so excited to show off our new place and in the lead up to our Grand opening weekend we’ve been featured twice in the local press.

Our shop has undergone some major renovations that have involved many hours and late nights by all our families, once again!. We’ve transformed a wooden clad pub complete with 3 bars into a creative hub of quilting; sewing; fabric; haberdashery; arts and crafts, in conjunction with Globe Arts Education. We have more plans and exciting developments to come in 2017, so watch this space!

We started out looking a little like this:

Last Saturday was our grand opening and our first Arts & Crafts fair to celebrate our official launch. We had numerous local artists, designers and makers all showing off and sharing their crafts.

To name just a few of our own, we were joined by Anne with all her amazing handmade gifts. She has everything from hand dyed wools, knitted baby jumpers, Christmas tree decorations and advent calendars and so many other lovely items perfect for gifts.

Alongside Anne we have one of our up and coming tutors, Fredericke of Baboosh Design. She will be joining us here on the 29th January and 12th March to teach her baby leggings & hareem pants. Classes can be found here.

Thank you to everyone that came to visit & support our new venture. You have no idea how much we really do appreciate your kind words and enthusiasm for our plans.

A busy day all round as we were also host to Jenny Haynes aka pappersaxsten and her wonderful Clamshell quilt class.

We had some fabulous creations during the day:
